The Golden Number:
The Mathematics of Life in the City
Brief: Define a target audience and invite them to reconsider the significance of numbers in their lives.
Strategy: The Golden Ratio is a mysterious mathematical theory which has been explored by designers throughout history. From Luca Pacioli’s ‘De Devina Proporione’ to Joseph Muller Brockmann’s ‘Swiss Style’, the use of applied mathematics to conjure beautiful yet functional design has shown that mathematics can be not only methodical but also expressive. The Golden Ratio and the Root 2 Rectangle were used as a basis for the grid of the publication design. A sans serif font crafted the written narrative into a highly structured grid. This allows the monochrome photography to take the reader on a journey through the historical marriage of mathematics and design.
This submission was awarded a Merit and membership into the ISTD.
